Just the site of the photophraghs and the comments made, Vladislav Tamarov reminds me of American Vets I've known and the seemingly countless wartime snapshots I've seen, especially taken in Vietnam when men like my dad were there. That includes the ones that were drafted, just like Vladislav Tamarov was drafted into the Soviet's military and sent to their Afghanistan version of our Vietnam.
The sampling of photographs on Vladislav's website Russian Writer showed me something I'd never seen before - the sight of frightened Russian soldiers. This shatters the image that the Cold War era U.S. government, media and nutcase groups like the John Byrch Society painted of Russian soldiers. I encourage you to check out his website and then order a copy of his book Afghanistan: A Russian Soldier's Story
for yourself.
